A quick money saving tip.

If you are like me and love reading and discovering new books, then today’s blog may well be of great interest to you!

Before I go on, I am making two assumptions:

1.  You buy ebooks in some format.

2.  You have budgeted for these purchases.

If you don’t do either of these things, then this post may well be irrelevant to you.

The last thing I want you to do is spend money on something you won’t use, or worse, spend money you don’t have!

So, here’s my tip for the day:

Sign up for Buck Books.  Buck books is an independent start-up that was set up to promote quality books that cost less than $1.

Signing up means that you get a daily recommendation of both non-fiction and fiction books.  All for less than $1.

This means that you’ll never have to spend more than $1 on a book if you don’t want to.

Ideal for those long train commutes, or this bus journeys you take to work everyday!

So, take a moment to sign up and discover a world of quality books for less than $1!

Coffee.

So I had a coffee with my mum today.

I don’t go out for coffee that often, but I was dropping her at the train station to travel home and as we were early we decided to go for coffee and a toasted sandwich in one of the ubiquitous coffee shop chains…

I had a coffee.  She had a hot chocolate.

We both had a sandwich.

£12.10.

Yep. £12.10.

On this occasion she was paying, so no problem on my behalf, but she paid it without really thinking about it at all.  And this got me thinking.

Why are we willing to pay £3 ($5) for a coffee, without even thinking about it, but unwilling to pay even half that amount on an electronic download such as an ebook?

One provides us with about 20 minutes of taste sensation and gets us fired up for the day, whilst the other could provide us with several hours of entertainment, or knowledge that will stay with us for a lifetime.

And my point is not that we should be buying ebooks instead of coffee.

My point is that we should think more about what we buy.

This is why one of the strategies in my book is to write down everything that you buy.  Dieters who keep a food diary lose more weight than those who don’t.

It’s about becoming more aware of what you are buying and making good choices with your money.

If you were to buy a coffee every day of the week, five times a week, at about £3 a go, over the year you would end up paying £780 ($1,182).  That’s a holiday.

That’s a new Apple computer.

That’s a (cheap) car.

That’s your credit card bill paid.

So, this week, why not take one of these:

Costa Cup

Or one of these:

starbucks-cup

And instead of buying a coffee, why not put 3 £1  coins (or a $5 bill) in the cup.

Do this every time you would usually buy a coffee and at the end of the month, use that money to buy something that will last.

Have a great day.

Life Space

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Luke Strickland, author of Life Space. Luke Selfie

Luke has a passion for seeing people finding the spaces in their life where they can allow their dreams to grow.  In his book he talks about how he has been able to do this, along with some great ideas as to how we can each do the same.

I certainly found it very helpful and have been finding all those little spaces, the moments between the minutes, the gaps in the busy where my dreams can flourish and grow.

Luke gave up some of his time to answer our questions:

J.A.Scott:  Tell us a little about yourself.
Luke Strickland: My name’s Luke, I’m an enthusiast about being creative in all different forms, whether that’s writing, playing music, growing things or making things in my workshop. I have a wonderful wife and two energetic kids, along with two fish, two cats and a Guide Dog puppy we’re fostering!

JAS:  In your book you talk about finding space in your life to let your dreams grow.  How do you find space in your life?
LS: It’s not easy that’s for sure! I work full time, I have small kids, I have various other commitments – carving out time for anything can be a challenge! Personally I’ve had to learn the discipline of saying no to things – it’s easy to fill our lives up with other people’s priorities, and without being selfish sometimes we need to recognise that. Secondly I think you have to get into a habit of taking small regular steps rather than occasional giant leaps – for me an example of that was committing to write a blog every week.
JAS:  What do you think hinders people, stopping them from allowing their dreams to grow or from chasing their dreams?
LS: That’s a tough question. It can be lots of things – I don’t think that many people set out NOT to chase their dreams, life just kinda happens around them. Feeling like you don’t have permission could be one element, or fears about rejection or how much it will cost. Sometimes people just feel like they can’t do it on their own – that’s why it can be really important to surround yourself with people who will encourage you and support you as you step out. Personally I just started working full time then sort of “woke up” ten years in realising that I’d put lots of dream on hold – literally gathering dust on the shelf.
JAS:  Big one now: What’s your greatest dream?
LS: Wow that is a big question! I’d love to be able to support my family through my writing and creativity whilst helping people along the way to be the best expression of who they’ve been made to be. Writing a New York Times bestseller would be fun along the way. That’s two things so cheating really… I’m not sure I have one big dream just lots of little ones!
JAS: What’s next in the pipeline for Luke Strickland, the author?
LS: I’m in the process of writing three books actually! One is a sequel to my book Life Space, about turning dreams into a compelling vision. The other two are about connecting with the environment in different ways… watch this space!
Thank you, Luke,  for taking the time to talk to us.
If you want to to find out more about Luke, then do visit his blog or take a look at his book.
I was very inspired by Luke’s book and I think you will be too.
Take a few minutes today and allow yourself the space to dream big.

If debt is stopping you from letting your dreams grow, then take a look at my book The 21 Day Debt Revolution and kickstart your future today.  With debt taking up less space in your life, you may just find the time to dream…

Setting Goals

When it comes to planning your finances, the main thing that will keep you on track is having a clear vision of your aim.

TargetYou need to know the “why” for your actions.

Take a few minutes and imagine a life where you had no debt.

What would you do with your money?

What would you buy?

Now write this all down in a positive, declarative way. In other words start writing your dream down with the words: “I will…”

For example: “I will own a large four bedroom house in the country side…” etc.

Once you have done this you will know where you want to get to and should be able determine what your first step towards achieving your goal should be.

Then, set yourself a SMART goal that you can achieve in the next week that will bring you closer to your dream.

Well done.

You are on your way to making your dreams come true!

J.A.Scott

(If you want to find out more about goal setting, Chapter 22 of The 21 Day Debt Revolution will be of great help.)

The Interview

Since releasing the book, things have been very interesting.

I have had an interview with a popular blog by a fellow author named Luke Strickland.  He recently wrote an excellent book called Life Space. (I will be interviewing Luke over the next couple of weeks so do keep an eye out for that.)Life Space

In it he talks about making space for your dreams to grow and as one of the things that most stifles dream growth is debt we found a synergy in which our topics complemented each other and consequently he asked me to be interviewed for his site.

It was a privilege and an honour to be interviewed, so thank you Luke for the opportunity – do check out the interview here.

I have also been speaking to a voice artist who has agreed to narrate The 21 Day Debt Revolution for an audiobook version.  He has an amazing voice and once everything is in place I’ll be able to reveal all, so do watch this space!

It’s great to see people’s dreams becoming reality, so whatever your dreams are for this year, I hope and pray that you overcome any obstacles that you may be facing and take steps towards making them a reality!

The Bestseller.

Great news! In the last two days since The 21 Day Debt Revolution came off the free promo it has become a No.1 Bestseller on Amazon!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/67e/78966213/files/2015/01/img_0644.jpg

Now, don’t get me wrong, I like the fact that the book is selling as this will allow me to spend more time writing and working on some other exciting related projects (more on those over the coming weeks…)

However, the main thing that excites me about these sales is the fact that this book could be helping so many people!

During the 5-day free promotion over 2400 people downloaded the book and since then it has continued being downloaded.

I feel honoured and privileged that so many people are interested and believe in this program.

For me, this is what brings me satisfaction as an author; the fact that something I have created is being used by people to help them change their own futures for the better.

I pray that as people stick with the program and see how much progress can be made in such a short time, that more and more people become debt free and that the culture around debt, as a way of life, changes.

My dream is to see nations of people who have defeated debt so that bank loans become a thing of the past.

This is my dream.

This is the revolution.

Christmas

Christmas has come.

This is the time of year when Christians all over the world celebrate the fact that God sent his son into the world as a gift to humanity.

He came to teach the world a better way of living.

He began the first true love revolution, fighting oppression with love, defeating darkness with love.

Ultimately, he paid the price for humanity’s wrong doing.  He paid off our debt with his life.

This Christmas, wouldn’t it be great if you were able to do a similar thing for someone else?

Maybe you have disposable income and could help pay someone’s electricity bill.  Or their gas bill.

Maybe you could pay for someone’s weekly shop.

Or you could donate to CAPuk, a charity that works to help get people out of debt.

Or you could gift this book to someone you know.

Or use it yourself so that next year at Christmas you will be in a position to give more generously than you ever have before.

After all, Christmas is not a time for receiving, but a time when we celebrate the start of the Revolution that brought us our freedom.

Free activities

During the holidays, as fun as it is to not have to do the school run in the morning(!) the fact that the children are at home can very quickly lead to added expense in the form of expensive activities.

Before you know it the day’s entertainment has added £20 here or £15 there to simply stop you from losing your mind as a parent and to stop the little monsters, sorry, little monkeys, from crawling the walls and destroying the house…

But what can be done that costs little to no money?

The best way to find out what your children would enjoy is to ask them.  This will not only provide you with fresh ideas that you may not have considered but will also ensure that the activities you decide to do with them are actually activities they want to do!

So you may find yourself crafting, making christmas cards or simply colouring.

Or you may find yourself going out to the park, going for walks, going for swims in the sea (at least in the Southern Hemisphere!) or anything else they suggest.

Just remember, it won’t be how much you spent on them that they remember later on, but the time you spent.

So go make some memories that will outlast anything that money can buy!
